Siberian Cats
Owning a Siberian cat is a very pleasurable rewarding and life-changing experience. The Siberian will become your best friend, confidante, problem-solver, and house clown. Siberians are one of the most ancient breeds, beginning as the Russian forest cat. There are images of them roaming the Siberian Taiga (forestland) even today and they are reported in large numbers in the wild, Siberian outlying territories.
Siberian Cat Appearance
These medium-sized cats were certainly built for their environment in the forests of icy Siberia. Siberian cats have long, triple-layered, water-resistant coats and sturdy, muscular bodies that seem heavy compared to their size.
BODY
The body is of medium length, with prominent musculature. The back is arched slightly higher than the shoulders, and the belly is barrel-shaped but firm. A moderate stomach pad may be present on the lower abdomen. Siberian cats tend to feel heavy for their size.
HEAD
The head is a modified wedge with rounded contours. It is in good proportion to the body. The Siberian Cat’s muzzle is well rounded and males typically develop prominent jowls.
EARS
The Siberian cat has medium-large ears with wide bases and rounded tips. The ears should be set as much on the sides of the head as on its top and should have a forward tilt. Furnishings may be prominent and ear tipping may be present.
COAT
The coat is of medium to long length. The triple coat is most prominent in cooler weather, with a ruff at the collar, long belly hair, and long breeches.
COLOR
All colours and patterns are accepted, with and without white, which may be present in any amount in any area. Buttons, lockets, and spots are allowed. Their thick coat of long hair comes in any colour including solid white, black, red, blue, and silver. They also come in a wide variety of patterns including smoke, point, calico, tabby, tortoiseshell, and bi-colour.
EYES
The eyes are medium to large and nearly round in shape. The outer corners should angle slightly toward the ears. All eye colours are possible. There is no relationship between coat colour and eye colour, except in colour point Siberian cats, which should have blue eyes.
LEGS & PAWS
The legs should be of medium length with substantial boning. The hind legs should be slightly longer than the forelegs. The paws should be large and rounded. Prominent toe tufts are desirable. Siberian Cat For Sale
TAIL
The Siberian cat’s tail should be of medium length with a wide base that tapers to a blunt tip. It should be thickly furnished.
Siberian Cat Grooming And Care
Siberians are all kinds of fluffy, so you may worry that these kitties need a lot of grooming. Not so! Although they have a three-layered coat, Siberians have glossy fur that you only need to brush once or twice a week to avoid tangles and matting. They moult heavily at the end of winter and then have a lighter moulting in the summer, so it’s a good idea to brush your pal daily during these times. Siberian Cat For Sale
Trim your kitty’s nails weekly, and check their ears for redness or unpleasant odours. If you notice any buildup, clean gently with a damp cotton ball and contact your veterinarian in case it’s a sign of an ear infection. You should also brush your feline friend’s teeth a few times a week.
Siberian Cat Health
Siberian cats have a lifespan of 8–10 years and they are typically healthy pets.
“The biggest genetic risk with this breed is a slightly higher risk of hypertrophic cardiomyopathy, otherwise known as HCM,” This is a condition in which the heart muscle enlarges and becomes less functional.
Reputable breeders will screen for health issues in your kitten, but it’s important to have them tested regularly into adulthood. HCM and other health problems can go undetected until later in your cat’s life.
